Tribute to Irmin Schmidt
The film will be screened as part of a special tribute to the avant-garde composer and legendary keyboardist Irmin Schmidt, who is best known as a founding member of German avant-garde rock group and electronic music pioneers CAN.
After a classical education as pianist, conductor and composer, Irmin Schmidt - who studied under Stockhausen and Ligeti - established CAN in the late 60s combining contemporary classical music with rock and jazz. CAN’s unparalleled genius remains unquestioned, timeless and immeasurably influential. Schmidt’s post-CAN career was no less groundbreaking, featuring solo albums, diverse collaborations, the opera Gormenghast, as well as extensive and award-winning film soundtrack work.
CAN Free Concert
The legendary "Free Concert" of groundbreaking German band CAN, recorded in Cologne's Sporthalle, Germany, on February 3, 1972.
The show was filmed by Martin Schäfer, Robby Müller and Egon Mann for director Peter Przygodda, who is primarily known as the editor on many of Wim Wenders’ films, while Müller was Wenders’ main cinematographer and also shot several of Jim Jarmusch’s films.
The circumstances of this Cologne show were unusual. Rather improbably for such an experimental band, CAN actually scored a chart success in Germany with “Spoon,” which would later be tacked onto the end of their album “Ege Bamyasi”. The success of Spoon led to this free concert, which was attended by approximately 10,000 people.
