Michael P. Aust is a German curator, organiser of cultural events and film producer born in 1965. His focal point of interest lies in the intersectionality of art forms, especially in the relationship of music and moving pictures. He heads the SoundTrack_Cologne film music festival and conference he founded in 2004, as well as SoundTrack_Zurich since 2020. He curated exhibitions, conferences and music festivals and was Festival Director of Braunschweig International Film Festival 2014-2019. Aust has worked in the film industry for more than 25 years with producer credits for 20 feature films and feature-length documentaries, including “101 Reykjavik”, “Stumbling Block”, “Low Lights”, “Parallax Sounds Chicago”, “Eva Hesse” and “The Sound of Cologne”, focusing on music and art. His directorial debut “Can and Me” hit the cinemas in March 2023. He is a voting member of the German Film Academy, Filmbüro NW, World Soundtrack Academy and board-Member of the Music Film Festival Network and of KulturNetz Köln. The Business graduate is Managing Director, owner and producer at TelevisorTroika GmbH, a Cologne-based company established in 1993 for film production, art events and public relations in arts.

Two music documentaries produced back to back – what could possibly go wrong? Michael P. Aust, director of SoundTrack_Cologne since 2004 and producer of 20 feature films and documentary features, shares his experience of filmmaking, production, and distribution, with a focus on music docs. Based on the long journey of his latest films CAN AND ME and THE SOUND OF COLOGNE he walks us through the life cycle of a film – from development to festivals – with a clear view on the guerilla style of music documentary filmmaking.
