Born in Utrera in 1923 and 1927, Fernanda and Bernarda Jiménez Peña represent the very essence of flamenco. Raised in a gypsy family, they absorbed the roots and passion of this ancestral art from an early age. Fernanda, with her soul-stirring soleá, and Bernarda, renowned for her powerful bulería: these inseparable sisters were two of the most remarkable flamenco cantaoras in history, unmatched artists of the deepest gypsy music. This documentary embarks on a journey from Utrera to Madrid, and from there to the 1964 World’s Fair in New York and the grand musical stages of Paris. It compellingly argues why it’s entirely fitting to regard them as the ‘Aretha Franklin and Billie Holiday of Andalusia.’ Even the maestro Camarón attested that in a flamenco jam session, they were simply unparalleled.
Before the screening, we will host a short talk by singer Yael Horwitz, who specialized in Spanish music in southern Spain. The lecture will be accompanied by live demonstrations by Horwitz, accompanied by guitarist Ilai Burla.
