XY Chelsea /
The two great dramas in Chelsea Manning’s life happened almost at the same time: she leaked 750 thousand classified documents from the US Army to WikiLeaks and came out publically as a trans woman. The soldier Bradley Manning, an intelligence analyst stationed in Iraq and sentenced to 35 years in a military prison for espionage, became Chelsea and fought for the right to serve jail-time as a woman. Manning was released after seven years, when President Obama commuted her sentence. But when she tried to find her place in the outside world, she encountered a deep hostility from those who refuse to recognize her gender identity, and those who branded her a traitor. This is the intimate portrait of a woman who insists on being heard, in spite of tremendous challenges.
