2018, 103 MIN, Silvia’s marriage to a wealthy diplomat was supposed to save her. The young Argentinian beauty was to leave behind her difficult childhood and start a new, glamorous life. But something went wrong, and despite the travels, the parties, the lavish houses, and the lovely children, the couple’s lives were fraught with drama and tension. Director María Silvia Esteve tries to understand her parents, but mostly her mother, by studying old home videos with her two sisters. She puts the stories they were told under a microscope, analyzing the hidden gaps, the omissions. Part documentary, part re-cut, the pieces of the past are accentuated, blurred, frozen, and played backward until the family chronicle becomes a universal drama, raising questions about memory, truth, illusions and appearances, as well as the nature of parent-child relationships.
