Central Airport THF
Berlin’s Tempelhof Airport was always meant for greatness: it is where the King of Prussia paraded his forces and Orville Wright showed-off his flight skills, where the first dirigible to cross the Atlantic landed, and where the Nazis dreamed of immortalizing their legacy. The decision to use the expansive concrete terminal to house Syrian refugees turns history on its head, giving the place a new, very human, and very compassionate aspect. Director Karim Aïnouz chooses the heroes of his film from the thousands living in the temporary settlement. Month after month, he follows them as they get to know the new world that may—hopefully—become their new home. The unique sights and sounds he shows weave together the airport’s past, its extraordinary present, and the dreams of its future.
