A Salute to Satyajit Ray and to Indian Classical Music in collaboration with Raga Mela Festival
With The Music Room (Jalsaghar), Satyajit Ray, who is widely considered one of the greatest film-makers of all time, brilliantly evokes the crumbling opulence of the world of a fallen aristocrat (the beloved actor Chhabi Biswas) desperately clinging to a fading way of life. His greatest joy is the music room in which he has hosted lavish concerts over the years—now a shadow of its former vivid self. An incandescent depiction of the clash between tradition and modernity, and a showcase for some of India’s most popular musicians of the day (with music by composer Vilayat Khan), The Music Room is a defining work by the great Bengali filmmaker.
The screening will be preceded by a short talk by Ron "Schpatz" Cohen about the music and social fabric of India through the lens of the cinematic masterpiece "The Music Room". The lecture will delve into the two main themes of the film: Classical Indian music and the social changes that India went through in the first decades of the 20th century.
Total duration approx. 120 minutes
The screening will be followed by a live music show in Hall 6:
Tavor Ben Dor (sitar) Tamar Klopper (tabla)
A traditional sitar and tabla duet showcasing the beauty and depth of classical Indian music.
About 30 minutes. Free Entrance
