Our Defeats /
Be it the social unrest that preceded the Paris riots of 1968, the general strike, or the street battles—young people were always at the center of it all. They wanted to change the world, or at least their corner of it. What remains of their defiance now, fifty years later? Director Jean-Gabriel Périot (whose film German Youth was screened here at Docaviv) gathered a group of film students to reenact, direct, shoot and act in scenes from famous films that captured the zeitgeist of those times. Interviewing the students, he tries to find out how much of that rebellious spirit resides in them, whether they understand what their parents’ generation had fought for, and whether those social and political problems are still relevant today. The answers are not always simple.
