Sherman’s March

Length 157 , USA (1986) Director: Ross Mcelweeשפה: ENGLISH, HEBREW SUBTITLES

Ross McElwee’s film was selected for preservation in the US National Film Registry, and rightfully so. What began as an attempt to follow General Sherman’s campaign to conquer the South during the American Civil War gradually became a personal contemplation about the possibility of finding love. A Southerner himself, the director had begun filming soon after a painful breakup. He documented his encounters with potential new partners, as well as other women he came in contact with—from relatives to acquaintances. This endeavor grew into a fascinating mosaic documenting the women of the American South. They talk about relationships, religion, growing up, finding success, and the ever-present fear of nuclear war that hovered over the country in those days. The winner of Sundance 1987 returns to the big screen in a brand-new digital restoration. Digital Restoration made possible by: Cinema Conservancy, Harvard Film Archive, Library of Congress
