The Gospel According to André
The fashion world was André Leon Talley’s escape, and it took him in with open arms, letting him show the world a new kind of Black masculinity. Talley, one of Vogue’s most influential editors, grew up in a small town in the American South during segregation, where the only place one bothered to dress up for was Church. But Talley dreamed of a world without end, vivid and exciting, and refused to let that dream go. He became a superhero, a magnificent caped giant flying between the capitals of the world, openly crying at fashion shows. Michelle Obama, Karl Lagerfeld, Fran Lebowitz, and Isabella Rossellini’s pig all get a dose of Talley’s heartwarming attitude, the kind unique to those who “see the world through the kaleidoscope eyes of a child”.
