The Border Fence /
The Border Fence
In late 2016, at the heart of the free and borderless Europe, a drama unfolded. Austria decided to erect a border fence in the province of South Tyrol to close off the Brenner Pass, preventing refugees from crossing the Alps into Austria and forcing them to turn to neighboring Italy. Director Nikolaus Geyrhalter (whose films, Homo Sapiens, Over the Years, and others, have been screened at Docaviv) strolls through the beautiful scenery, studies the convoluted bureaucracy needed to rebuild fences and walls, talks to the locals about their ambivalent attitude toward the refugees, examines the propaganda surrounding the operation, and ponders along with the viewers about the price a society must pay for choosing to barricade itself behind a border fence.
