Up the Mountain
When the elderly Chinese artist and the women he teaches sit and paint in his humble village home, the line between the canvas and the real-life interactions of teacher, family, and students often blurs. The warm home and the lives lived inside it seem to merge with the beautiful landscape outside. The lake, the mountaintops, the vegetation—all look like they were painted by Shen Jianhua, while the women’s canvases feature events and people from the small village. Shen, who came to the village from Shanghai many years ago, brought with him music, culture, and a lifestyle unknown to his neighbors. The personal conversations that occur in his painting classes lead them to rethink their lives.
